The Medco 100 Over 100
Why can some people smoke and eat fatty foods yet live to old age in good health while others do everything right and still develop disease in middle age? The Medco 100 Over 100 could provide the answers to this medical mystery.
The Medco 100 Over 100 are “genomic pioneers” – 100 centenarians (ages 100 and older) whose DNA will serve as the basis for the Archon Genomics X PRIZE presented by Medco®. These special centenarians could transform health care as we know it, ushering in a new era of genomic-based, personalized medicine that may forever change the way we live.
Teams will compete to rapidly, accurately and economically sequence the genomes of the Medco 100 Over 100, presenting an unprecedented opportunity to identify those “rare genes” that protect against disease and provide valuable clues to health and longevity. It could also lead to the world’s first medical grade genome - a genomic clinical standard to help physicians better diagnose and treat patients. This is a crucial step needed to facilitate the transformation of genomic research into actionable clinical care, with the goal of ushering in a new era of personalized medicine to improve medical outcomes and drive down healthcare costs.
